WEEK IN REVIEW:
Welcome to Block 6!  We have a great educational lineup for the holiday season!  The academic theme for Block 6 will be EMS, administration and disaster.  Highlights include a visit to ACEP headquarters for conference and more (see list below).  Don’t forget that we are also kicking off interview season this week.  Our first dinner with the applicants will be Nov 19th!

Last week we had a fantastic agenda of educational activities.  Journal Club was held on Wednesday at Pappasitos, where Drs. Taylor and Neff discussed articles on Propofol and Ketamine, respectively.  Dr. Cantor, our guest and lead discussant, chimed in strategically to offer his thoughts on the benefits and limitations of these medications.

Thursday’s EM Conference started with a quick update on the Milliman Care Guidelines.  Parkland is going to start using these guidelines for admissions and billing, because they are the gold standard for multiple healthcare payer entities.  Next, we had a case conference with Drs. Griffith and Jones discussing Sick Sinus Syndrome.  Dr. Schaeffer was our next lecturer, offering an outstanding Senior Resident Grand Rounds on the topic of CT scanning.  Dr. Blomquist, an ophthalmology faculty member, occupied the third hour of conference where he completed Part 2 of his talk on ophthalmologic emergencies.  The last lecture of the day was EM Grand Rounds with Dr. Cantor, Chair of PEM at Suny-Syracuse.  He gave an outstanding lecture on pediatric ophthalmologic emergencies.
