WEEK IN REVIEW:
Last week was great!  We celebrated a wacky holiday, scored an extra hour on Sunday, and, of course, had a couple of great educational activates.

On Wednesday, we had our blockly intern conference.  Dr. Roppolo lectured briefly on topics in ophthalmology.  We then moved into a series of three literature reviews.  The topics were ABGs vs. VBGs in the assessment of DKA patients, the utility of steroids in spinal injuries, and finally the use of terbutaline vs. epinephrine in severe asthma.  The verdicts are that VBGs are comparable, steroids are likely overrated, and terbutaline and epi are useful.

Thursday conference was chuck-full of great presentations.  We started off with reading program, where Dr. Commons led a quiz session on pediatric eye trauma.  The corresponding article is posted on the wiki.  Next, we had a theatrical case conference by Drs. Philip and Suter on tranverse myelitis.  Dr. Iversen was our next speaker.  In one last hurrah before she jets to New Zealand for her elective, she offered a fabulous Senior Resident Grand Rounds on neonatal resuscitation.  Her lecture was followed by part 1 of 2 of an excellent review series on emergency ophthalmology prepared by one of UTSW’s esteemed ophthalmology faculty, Dr. Blomquist.  Finally, conference concluded with presentations by Drs. O’Connel and Treichler covering the new observation area and the new admissions process.
