WEEK(s) IN REVIEW:
I know you’ve all been patiently awaiting this enhanced double edition of Conference News.  Well, here it is!

Conference October 1st was a great one.  At least that is what I remember as it was two weeks ago.  I am kidding.  We started the conference off with reading program, going over an article on early pregnancy ultrasound from Luber’s landmark collection of EM literature on the wiki.  Next, Drs. Krech and Benitez gave a great case conference on tropical diseases.  Ralph Baine followed with a hands-on Senior Resident Grand Rounds.  Using white and red beads, and a Donald Trump “you’re fired” attitude, Ralph used the analogy of a White Bead Company to highlight some important concepts in process improvement.  Our third hour was filled by an STD update by Dr. Nemeth.  Finally, in the last hour we had a cameo lecture by Dr. Velez on adverse drug reactions.

In light of ACEP, no conference was scheduled for October 8th.  Several faculty and residents attended including the entire R3 class sans Michelle King who is currently in New Zealand.  We missed you Michelle.  ACEP was marked by great lectures, interesting exhibits and a few social hours here and there... and, well, pretty much everywhere all the time.  Amongst many others, highlights included the official induction of Dr. Gardner as ACEP President and Dr. Suter receiving the John Wiegenstein Leadership Award, one of the highest honors awarded by our specialty.  Note for the R2 class, the EMRA party was totally worth it.

A FEW ADMINISTRATIVE NOTES:

  • Go to Journal Club, it’s going to be awesome!
  • Block 5 begins this coming Monday, October 19th.  Contact your future services to ensure a smooth transition.
  • The academic theme for Block 5 will be Ophthalmology
  • There continues to be confusion in regards to mandated days off.  The RRC and our leadership require 4 days off in 28, not 1 day off every 7.  That pretty much means only a few specific call months may place conference in conflict with your days off.  Sorry for the bum news, but six shifts clustered around conference does not equal an automatic day off.
  • For the temporally challenged, today is Tuesday
