Chief Residents' Welcome

Welcome to Parkland! As the 2011-2012 chief residents, we would like to introduce you to our program at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. As Dr. Pepe, our chairman always says, our mission is one of public service and education, and we hope to impart that message to you as you browse our website.

Our program has made huge leaps and bounds in the past several years, including …

  • Asynchronous learning – our program director, Dr. Wainscott, recently gave a national presentation about our novel approach to education. As emergency physicians, we all know that we learn best by doing, not by sitting in a classroom. Therefore part of our conference time is spent outside of a classroom in various activities including journal club, EMS rideouts, ultrasound shifts…the possibilities are endless!\

  • International Health Fellowship - our first international fellow joined this year.  This complements our established fellowship programs in Toxicology, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Emergency Medical Services, Government Emergency Medicine Security Services (GEMSS), Practice Management/Health Policy and an EM-to-Critical Care fellowship track.

  • Ultrasound Fellowship- Dr. MacLong Tran  and Dr. Jeremy Smith have revolutionized our ultrasound curriculum with all residents obtaining credentialing in emergency echo, FAST, abdominal scans and DVT scans. In 2011, under Dr. Jeremy Smith  (fellowship director), our first US fellows were introduced to our program. We currently utilize 2 Zonare US machines and 1 Sonosite in the department with 2 additional Zonare US going into service this fall. They are currently taking applications for ultrasound fellows for 2012-2013.

  • Resident participation in state-wide and national organized medicine.  We have residents serving at the national level on EMRA critical care and health policy committees, along with the Texas College of Emergency Physicians (TCEP) and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).  We also have members serving as delegates to the Texas Medical Association.

  • Resident research publications.  Last year we had over 15 posters presented at state and national conferences.  Also several of our faculty hold NIH research grants including several that are part of the Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium Registry (Parkland is one of only 7 designated Resuscitation Center by the NIH).

  • Not to mention the restructuring of the EDVideo at NBC About The Redesigned Flow in the ED

Parkland is your quintessential county program – we are the safety-net hospital for indigent care in Dallas County, and proudly so. The taxpayers of Dallas County have voted to support the building of a brand new facility (a new $1.2 billion dollar hospital), for which the groundbreaking recently took place in November 2010. We take care of everyone and everything, from homeless people to presidents, from blisters to acute MIs. We are also home to a regional burn center (and the Parkland burn formula), level 1 adult trauma center, and some of the premier internal medicine, surgery, and ob/gyn programs in the country. Only a few steps away from our ED is Children’s Medical Center of Dallas – the only level 1 pediatric trauma center in north Texas, where we train with world-renowned pediatric EM faculty.

And did we mention the new Parkland! On Oct. 28, 2010, Parkland broke ground on a new health care campus, set for completion in winter 2014. Feel free to explore the new campus and follow it's construction progress at http://newparkland.parklandhospital.com

Need a bit more? Check out ABC News Spends 24 Hours in the Parkland ED (and the good news? we fixed that waiting room… come visit, and we’ll show you how we did it!)

So take a look around, familiarize yourself with our home away from home, and feel free to contact any of us if you have any questions. We hope that you enjoy looking around this website as much as we have enjoyed making it.
