Residents from the Class of 2013

Sutersville/Pittsburgh PA
Duke University - Political Science
The Ohio State University COM

I grew up in a small town outside of Pittsburgh with my parents and one older sister. After high school I followed my heart (aka college basketball) to Duke where I tented out all four years and occasionally studied international relations along with the standard premedical courses. After college, I accepted an Air Force HPSP scholarship to attend The Ohio State University College of Medicine where I solidified my interest in emergency medicine and gained a few others, including diagnostic ultrasonography. I chose UTSW and Parkland because of their excellent national reputations, their increasing devotion to ultrasound education, the ability to combine education with public service, and of course the excellent location in Dallas, TX.

Miami, Florida
Florida International University
University of Miami
Ross University

"Oh the wonderul places you'll go"...Dr. Seuss. Perhaps the best fitting words to describe my journey so far.

My interest in medicine dates back to childhood and hanging out with my dad as he completed his residency. My father came from Cuba a seasoned and trained Orthopedic Surgeon and at 44 years of age he was asked to repeat it with kids almost half his age. I was witness to his sacrifices in order to provide a better life for my brothers and mother as well as satisfy his dedication to his lifelong work...medicine!!

I have borrowed from that since his death in 2000 to forge ahead and break through any barriers in my path. My best friend says I often fall into a glass of champagne, meaning I have good luck, but attaining a position at this program after completing a FM residency is a great big bottle of Don Perignon.

I graduated from an FM residency in 2009 but while in that program I moonlighted in the ED. After graduation I was offered a spot in the ED and have been there ever since, enjoying every day, person, moment, and situation good or bad. I am so lucky to be here and perhaps with SOME LUCK I will make a contribution to an already outstanding 2013 class.

Novi, Michigan
University of Michigan
Michigan State Univ College of Human Medicine

I was born and raised in southeast Michigan, got my BA in psych at the University of Michigan. After graduation, I moved to NYC to “find myself” and decided to become a doctor, so I attended Columbia University’s post-bacc pre-med program and came back to Michigan (MSU) for medical school.
I enjoy the outdoors, meeting new people and eating anything with chocolate in it. I’m really looking forward to my first winter of not having to dig my car out from under a huge pile of snow.
Despite having no connections to Texas, UTSW really stood out on the interview trail.
I was so impressed with everything the program has to offer and how I would have the opportunity to really explore all areas of EM here. And the people here, from the residents to the faculty, are amazing. Now I just need to get my fiancé here to make this experience perfect!

Houston/Plano
Northwestern University- Economics
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

I was born and raised smackdad in Houston and then transplanted to Plano, TX, just in time for high school. Fled Texas for college at Northwestern with no clue about my future. Took time off after graduating to work/travel/figure things out. After wandering around the world for awhile, I decided to become a doctor. Just finished 4 fabulous years at UT Southwestern and am excited to embark upon this thing called residency here at Parkland. I love hanging out with friends and family, aerobics classes, yoga, watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, cooking, playing with my cat, Dalai...

League City, TX
Abilene Christian University - Biology
Univ of North Texas HSC

I'm a Texas girl, born and raised. I grew up in the Houston area, found my way to West Texas for college and then Fort Worth for medical school. I love working out, watching Texas football (hook em!), playing cards, scuba diving, and spending time with my husband. I feel so blessed to be in Dallas for residency.  The program is fantastic and the people are even better. I couoldn't find a program I liked more, so here I am still in Texas!

St. George, UT
BYU - Genetics and Biotechnology
Wayne State Univ SOM

Grew up among the red rock desert of St. George UT close to Zions National Park. Needless to say I love outdoors stuff including biking, hiking, camping and about any sport that deals with a board (primarily wakeboarding in the summer and snowboarding in the winter). Met my wife Arika during Senior year at BYU, we've been married for 5 yrs and have 2 amazing sons Jackson (3) and Caden (1). After 4 freezing years in Detroit (Wayne St. SoM) we were ready for the heat again and were so happy to get our first pick of ER programs. I interviewed here fairly early and never found a program to match it. There is a feeling of excellence and high expectations here coupled with fantastic friendly residents and dedicated faculty that went unrivaled among other institutions I interviewed at. We are so happy and excited to be here at UTSW!

Dallas, TX
Texas Tech University
Univ of North Texas HSC

One measure of my day is how many hi-fives I give or receive, and most days I am working the ED, I break the ten mark easily. I am finishing up my second month in the department and know that I have found a great home. Being surrounded by awesome, hard-working, fun and extremely competent people makes the days enjoyable no matter how slammed or crazy the shift gets. I love my nurses, I enjoy the comraderie of my upper levels, and genuinely like the faculty. I never though I would ever say this in my life, but I love being at work.

My journey through life began in Dallas, TX, right across the street from Parkland at St Paul Hospital. I grew up in Dallas, where I spent most of my time reading sci-fi/ fantasy books. I play keyboards in a local band, The Push, and grass out an acoustic guitar as well. I enjoy backpacking, canoeing, and cycling. I walk through life jamming out to the music in my head.

Emergency medicine appealed to me because I like being a generalist, I enjoy a fast-paced and busy work environment, and I like the challenge of acting as a nidus of calm and skill in the midst of the extremes of human emotion.

To you the person who has read about me, thank you for taking the time. I hope that I have provided some insight into how I and the majority of those who are part of the Parkland EM program roll. Come hang out on planet awesome.

New Orleans
University of New Orleans - B.S. General Biology, Minor in Chemistry
LSUHSC in New Orleans - B.S. Medical Technology
Louisiana State Univ SOM in New Orleans

Born in Costa Rica and moved to New Orleans at the age of 12 where I lived until now. I have been married to my beautiful wife Laura for 8 years and I have two precious little girls, Isabella (5) and Lucia (3). I love watching the LSU tigers play football but my favorite hobby is watching Drew Brees and the Saints score touchtowns and put on a good show on Sundays.

After just a few days at UTSW/Parkland during my Senior away rotation, I knew that this was the place where I wanted to train. I was amazed by the efficiency within the division of EM and I was highly impressed with the residents and faculty as well. I loved the atmosphere created by the residents and I felt very comfortable working along such an amazing group of doctors.

My wife, daughters and I are very excited about this next stage in our lives and look forward to making Dallas our home. Make no mistake though, for we will remain Saints fans until the end. Who Dat!

Natchitoches, LA
LSU
University of New Orleans
Louisiana State Univ SOM in Shreveport

I was born and raised in a small town in Louisiana. I went to LSU in Baton Rouge for undergrad, then worked for a year in pharmaceutical sales. I always regretted not pursuing medical school, so I went back to school at the University of New Orleans to complete my pre-med classes. I went to medical school at LSU in Shreveport, and am now living outside of Louisiana for the first time in my life. I first became interested in Parkland because my husband is a pilot for Southwest Airlines and based here in Dallas. After spending a month rotating here I knew it was a perfect fit! I love traveling, and I also enjoy anything outdoors, especially water skiing, snow skiing, scuba diving and fishing. I love living in Dallas and I love finding something new about this city every day!

I chose UT Southwestern EM because of its excellent reputation and also Dallas is an amazing place to live. Oh yeah, my nickname chosen by my intern class is Devo.

Pittsburgh PA
UT Austin
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

I grew up in the mean streets of Pittsburgh PA and I am a huge Steelers fan. At 14, I moved to Oregon where, I became very in touch with the outdoors, skiing, fishing, wrestling bears and what not. After a few years of living in a town of 8,000 people, I decided to go to the largest school in the country at UT Austin. I went to UTSW for medical school, and I chose Parkland because I found that they had the best faculty(google Paul Pepe), the best opportunities, and by far the coolest residents. Finally, I realized that Texas is rapidly becoming the place to practice emergency medicine and I would like to stay here once residency is complete.

Cedar Hill, Texas
The University of Texas at Austin - Biology
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

Hi everybody! The given name is Juan Marcos, but I have always gone by Mark. I grew up in Cedar Hill, Texas and love fishing, camping, and just being outdoors. I guess you can say that I am a product of the University of Texas system; I went to UT Austin for college, UT Southwestern for medical school, and here I am now for residency. When I'm not at work I enjoy spending time with my family; during the college football season, I can be spotted wearing burnt orange and cheering on the Texas Longhorns. I am very fortunate and excited to be a part of this incredible training program, and I could not imagine being anywhere else.

I was born in India and have lived various parts of the Northeast, so coming to Texas is quite a change! I love traveling, so i'm excited to explore the southwestern part of the country. When I'm not in the hospital, you'll probably find me lounging in the waiting rooms of various airports.

Medicine has been a natural calling that I have pursued since childhood. My mother and grandmother were my greatest inspiration, and I attribute my success to them. My other interests in medicine are wide ranging from Global Health, Holistic Medicine, and Disaster Medicine.

Relatedly, I did research in Kolkata, India on maternal health and child education. Currently, I serve as the international liason for Nanritam, a non-governmental organization that aims to uplift impovrished communities throughout West Bengal, India. Carrollton, Tx

So I grew up in the Dallas area and did my medical school training down at Texas A&M/Scott&White.  I was an EMT back in high school and that's where my interest in EM started.  My other interests include Lacrosse, lifting weights, cooking, technology, and relaxing with friends and family.

Things that drew me to Parkland:

  • Staff attendings who are known in their fields and who come from all over the country
  • We are a busy county hospital; we see EVERYTHING

  • Your off-service attendings are also well-known in their various fields and love to teach

Lubbock, TX
Texas A&M University - Biomedical Science
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

Lover of the finer things in life: Texas Aggies, Larry McMurtry novels, blogging, facebook, talk radio, B league basketball tournaments. Though I am of a significantly slighter build, fellow intern Joe Young will soon feel the wrath on the tennis court. I am so fortunate to be a part of this tremendous program. From the unbelievably diverse patient population to the dedicated faculty to the lifelong bonds I have seen formed among the residents, I could not imagine a better environment for emergency medicine training.

Valrico, FL
University of South Florida - Computer Engineering
Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine

I was born and raised in Tampa, FL. I'm Chinese and Jamaican--different, but unique.  I grew up playing soccer and tennis my whole life. I'm a 5.0 tennis player for those avid players...Love to go deep sea fishing, work out, play poker, play soccer and tennis, watch Gator football, dance, and just be around people. I recently started road biking! I really had no intentions of coming to UTSW, as it was my last interview and I had no ties to Texas. However, after learning about the program and meeting faculty and residents, there was no way I couldn't rank this program #1. I loved it, and I consider myself lucky to be a part of this program!
