Residents from the Class of 2014

India
Rajah Muthiah Medical College

I grew up in India and went to Medical school there. On a dare, I took the PLAB exam and went to UK where I did a surgical residency. I went on to do research and during that time decided to change my career to emergency medicine. I married and moved to the US a few years ago. Since I had to take the USMLEs anyway, I decided to take a break and enjoy life for a while.  I have 2 awesome sons who, like me, love the outdoors.  I like traveling, hiking, music and painting. Spend most of my time off with my family and friends.  At med school I took part in various track & field event and played volleyball.

I love working at Parkland with it's diverse patient population, amazing faculty and great residents. The main appealing factors, for me, were the location, ultrasound training and exposure to toxicology & peds.  It is an amazing experience, working with the great minds of Emergency medicine and learning from the best.

Hi there!  I'm Alex Black, and I was born and raised right here in Dallas, Texas.   I started my medical career at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas in 1994 where I worked through high school and college as a patient care technician in the main operating room.  In 2005, I attended Paramedic School at UT Southwestern, training in the Emergency Department of Parkland Hospital.  I then worked as a paramedic and firefighter for Dallas Fire Rescue in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas up until the time I entered medical school in 2007.  I attended medical school at UT Southwestern here in Dallas.  I consider myself very fortunate to continue my training at Parkland, and am extremely excited about my future career.  I enjoy traveling, playing golf, attempting to play guitar, cooking/BBQing, playing poker and backgammon, and reading.  My research interests include EMS, first responder safety, and carbon monoxide poisoning.

I have lived in over 25 cities in Texas, South America, Utah, and Boston and have to say that the DFW Metroplex is my home.  I hae a great wife, Jalei, and daughter, Elliot, that I spend most of my free time with.  I chose the field of emergency medicine because it truly is the only specialty worth doing.  The acuity, variety, and the feeling that I get that I am actually helping people is what keeps me motivated to work hard.  UTSW was my top choice of places to end up because I felt that it would prepare me better for community emergency medicine practice than any other program in the country.  I rotated through the department as a 4th year medical student and felt that the residents were easy to get along with, fun loving, and amazing physicians.

University of Iowa - Integrative Physiology
Univ. of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine

I came to train at Parkland because of its high patient volume/acuity,degree of resident autonomy, large residency program, and its mission as a county hospital for the underserved. I was also looking to leave the Midwest and I loved living in Texas during the summer following my M1 year. After meeting the residents, Dr. Wainscott, and Dr. Pepe, I knew Parkland was committed to being one of the best programs in the country.

I was born in Austin, TX, and use that fact to claim an Austinite's status.  Raised just north of San Antonio, just south of New Braunfels, TX, grew up playing multiple sports in the south Texas heat.  Played piano as a child, however, threw that by the wayside(for more sports time), and that instumental lapse has been and remains my only true life regret thus far.  Ranked in superchamps in tennis in high school, also wrote/acted in film festival.  Went to undergrad at UT Austin, second claim to Austin as home, double majored in Plan II(liberal arts honors) and biology.  Wrote a screenplay for my thesis.  Took a year off between undergrad and med school, roofed houses to work with my hands and toured music festivals and beaches of California and Florida.  Eventually came to medical school here at UT Southwestern, thinking I wanted to do internal medicine (internists being the last true generalists practicing in my mind), realized while in the ED on trauma that the ER docs were the last true practicing generalists.  I met my fiance, Nikki, at UTSW, so I have an unconditional love for the place. We have a marriage date set for fall of 2012.  Love EM for the undifferentiated patient, the unfettered access to health care regardless of economics, critical care, and variety.

Austin, TX
University of Texas- Biochemistry
UTMB Galveston

I grew up in the Austin area and went to UT for undergrad.  I got into medicine after working in my father's dental office and taking trips down to Mexico to provide free dental care.  I went to medical school at UTMB.  Emergency Medicine was a perfect match for me.  I love the fast paced, hands on environment.  I rotated at Parkland as a 4th year student and was extremely impressed with the program.  In my spare time I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, snowboarding, wakeboarding, and camping.  I want to eventually travel the world.  I am up for anything that promises to be an adventure and look forward to the next 3 years!

Baylor University - Biology
UT Southwestern

I was born and raised in the great city of Austin, Texas.  I attended undergrad at Baylor University where I studied Biology and Chemistry.  After graduating, I moved up to Dallas to attend medical school here at UT-Southwestern.  I wanted to stay at Parkland for residency because of the high volume and high acuity of patients we see here.  I knew that Parkland would prepare me for a career in emergency medicine better than any place in the country.  My interests include EMS and wilderness medicine.  I enjoy traveling, camping, kayaking, hiking, photography, and reading.

Hey Guys,

My name is Ahmer Khan and I was born and raised in Dallas, TX.  After going to high school in Irving, I went to undergrad at Baylor University in Waco, TX and then ended up going to medical school in Las Vegas, NV.  Yes, I managed to get through med school in Sin City believe it or not.  During my time off between college and medical school, I did an internship with the team physicians for the Dallas Mavericks which sparked my interest in Sports Medicine.  I also was an Emergency Room Physician Scribe at Dallas and Plano Presbyterian Hospital for one year.  Being a scribe is what solidified my passion for emergency medicine dealing with the variety, acuity and developing a sixth sense for your patients that I believe is unique to this specialty.  I am blessed and truly lucky to be back home at Parkland to serve the underserved.  In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, traveling with my beautiful wife and playing all sorts of sports.  Last but not least, Go Baylor Bears, Sic'em!!!

Humboldt, IA
The University of Iowa
Univ. of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine

I was born in Bismarck, North Dakota and was raised in Humboldt, Iowa. A love for the Hawkeyes was engrained (read: beat) into me at a young age, so when it was time to head off to college it was a simple decision. I enjoyed my time at Iowa thoroughly, so after graduating with an undergraduate degree in biology, I extended my stay to attend medical school. I originally entered medical school with my heart set on a career in surgery; however, emergency medicine ultimately won out with its varied spectrum of physical and mental pathology.

I have spent my entire life in the Midwest and am ready to branch out; thus, when it came time to look at residency programs I focused my search elsewhere. Apart from its location, I originally became interested in Parkland due to its high patient volume and acuity. When I visited Parkland for my interview, it became quite apparent that there was a strong emphasis on autonomy coupled with unrivaled teaching. While it was the aforementioned qualities which peaked my interest in the program, it was the strong relationships between the residents and attendings which ultimately made my decision to attend residency here effortless.

Wroclaw, Poland
University of Missouri-Columbia - Biochemistry Major, Biology Minor
University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine

I'm originally from Poland, lived there till I was 7 and then moved to Columbia, MO.  I stayed there thru medical school.  After deciding that I wanted to enter Emergency Medicine, I started thinking about places that I would want to live.  I was ready to leave Missouri and live in a big city.  When choosing a program, I wanted to make sure that I would get a wide variety of experiences so that I would be well prepared when working on my own.  It was also important for me to have good off service rotations so that I could learn from the source and then apply it to my own practice.  When I came to interview at Parkland, I realized that this was the type of place I was looking for! Im very excited that I will be training here and look forward to the next 3 years!

Broken Arrow, OK
Oklahoma State University - International Business/Marketing
University of Texas Medical School at Houston

It took me a while to find emergency medicine, but now I'm finally here!  In college, I always wanted to fly for an airline, so I worked my way through pilot training to earn my Airline Transport Pilot license.  After being hired by a smaller airline, I was subsequently furloughed after the September 11th, 2001 tragedy.  I was still committed to aviation, so I started a flight school.  During extra time between flights, I started flying for a great charity called Angel Flight.  This was my first real encounter with patients, and there was an immediate connection.  I then went back to school to earn my prerequisites for medical school, and started working as an OR tech.  That turned into a research job, which turned into medical school, which turned into residency here at UTSW!  So I am very thankful to be here now and looking forward to a great year!

I grew up in Dallas, worked in advertising for several years before deciding to go back to school to get my pre-med reqs done. I ended up getting a second degree. I took my MCAT late due to work/school schedule so I did a yr of molecular genetics research at UTSW before beginning medical school here. I did research in both ER and Trauma throughout medical school and I'm super excited to be here. I love cooking, running/lifting and having fun with my friends/family, most of whom live in Dallas.

Hey everyone,
I was born in China, and moved to Austin, TX where I grew up and when to undergrad and yes I do bleed orange. Outside of the hospital I love to play basketball, snowboard and hang out with my friends. In between the time between med school and the start of intern year, I took a month long snowboarding trip in Colorado, and a two month trip in China and Thailand. I look forward to being an intern in the ED coming this July.

Aiea, HI
University of Maryland, College Park
Boston University School of Medicine

I was born and raised in Hawaii, and I hope to live there again some day. I was a gymnast my whole life, and I went to college at the University of Maryland, College Park on an athletic scholarship. Go Terps!! I loved being an athlete and I would never trade that experience for anything in the world.

I went to medical school at Boston University (burrrr) and now I'm here in Texas! Dallas is an awesome place to live, and I know I'm just beginning to experience all the city and DFW area have to offer. After just a short time working, I know Parkland is an amazing place to work at. Everyone from residents, attendings, and administrative staff are extremely supportive and easy to get along with.

Salt Lake City, Utah
Weber State University - Zoology
University of Utah School of Medicine

I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Although I have loved living in Utah, I could not be more excited to be doing my training in Dallas.

I grew up playing competitive tennis, participating in local, regional and national events.  Since I was eight years old, tennis has been one of my passions.  I was a member of the women’s tennis team at Weber State University.

I am the first in my family to have a medical career. Initially I thought I would be a pediatrician but after completing my Emergency Medicine rotation I knew that was the specialty for me.  I love the varied patient population I am able to treat every day as well as not knowing exactly what I am going to see each shift. EM is the perfect balance of intellectual and hands-on medicine combined with an outstanding schedule.

I could not be happier with my decision to rank UTSW at the top of my list. The people here are friendly and unbelievably brilliant. I consider myself lucky to be able to learn from many of the great teachers and leaders in Emergency Medicine. Parkland Hospital is a unique and great place to train. It provides a high volume and diversity of patients to help and from whom to learn.  I feel very fortunate to be here.

Dallas, TX
University of Richmond - History
University of Virginia School of Medicine

Hello everyone!  I was born and raised in northeast Dallas and am really pumped about moving home to Texas after an 8 year hiatus in Virginia.  It will be nice to be back in the land of Whataburger and to no longer have by car egged every Sunday during NFL season [thank you, Redskins fans].  Some of my favorite things to do are to sleep and watch football, both of which I’m prepared to give up this year.  I enjoy BBQing, going to movies, and just hanging out with friends and family.  Right now, my husband and I are doing some serious renovations to our house, but I look forward to eventually finishing up the work and hosting a big BBQ in the Fall…. or maybe Spring! : )

Tyler, Texas
Texas Christian Univeristy, Fort Worth, Texas
Des Moines University - Osteopathic Medical Center

Hey, I'm Jace Taylor. I was born in Fort Worth and raised in Tyler, Texas. I went to TCU for undergrad where I majored in biochemistry and history. I spent 4 years after undergrad working as an ER scribe in Fort Worth, a job that took me all over the country working in a variety of ER settings. I went to the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa. I'm happy to be leaving the snow and coming home to good barbeque and Mexican food.

My interests include hiking, world travel, scuba diving, basically anything outdoors. I also love music. I go to concerts and music festivals whenever I get the time, and I'm glad to be back in a city with a vibrant music scene. I also play acoustic guitar. I love to read history books, especially books about the history of medicine. I chose EM because I like the pace, the variety, and the fact that the specialty is expanding rapidly in its scope and variety.

I'm excited to match to Parkland. The faculty and residents are incredible, and I am excited to be part of a county hospital that has so many resources at its disposal.

Detroit, MI
University of Michigan
Wayne State University

I was born in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), lived in Ontario, Canada till I was 10, then moved to  Michigan where I'd been living before moving out to Dallas for residency.  I'm a huge sports fan (especially my Detroit/UMich teams), music lover, and can't get enough of traveling all over the world- learning about new places/cultures is fascinating to me.  I've always had a passion for international health and medical mission work.  Parkland has been an amazing place to train- high acuity and volume, diverse patient population, an incredible group of residents and faculty, and a mission to serve those that others would turn away.  Dallas is a great city to live in- I think I've only scratched the surface of what there is to see and do!
